Interface Redesign

This week we were tasked with redesigning an aspect of a game we felt like had an underdeveloped or sub par UI system. While scouring through a multitude of my video games I decided upon a relatively new but still about 4 year old game called Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. I am a huge star wars nut and while I loved this game the UI, in particular the upgrade sub menu was really impersonal and left me feeling like I was playing an old arcade game. The dull and muted colors mixed with just a lack of anything Star Wars related really detracted from the game as well as the fun. So in my redesign I focused on incorporating more Star Wars elements and working the look to actually make practical sense as the great Star Wars universe. Some of these redesign elements include:

  • Upgraded top menu that would feature part of your armor set as well as your varied light saber you can get through the course of the game. The light saber would change color as you scroll through the other menus.
  • Introduction of light saber crystals instead of just colored points you would earn as you leveled up in the actual game. Since the game is based around killing Jedis', why not use the crystals from their light sabers instead as currency for upgrades?
  • Reworking of layout
  • Inclusion of a video that plays out with the button controls as well as shows off the small description for new moves being purchases or when looking back over how to do specific abilities.
